Amit Seru is The Steven and Roberta Denning Professor of Finance at Stanford Graduate School of Business, a Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution and Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research (SIEPR), and a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER). Before joining Stanford, he was the Dennis and Karen Chookaszian Professor of Finance at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.

Professor Seru is a leading scholar of financial intermediation, banking, regulation, and the evolving structure of the financial system. His research examines how credit is created, funded, and monitored across both traditional banks and nonbank institutions, including private credit and other alternative forms of financial intermediation. His work has shaped discussions on financial stability, regulation, innovation, and the future architecture of capital markets. His research has been published in all the leading journals in economics and finance. 

He has advised and presented his research to policymakers, central banks, and regulatory agencies around the world, including the Federal Reserve, European Central Bank (ECB), Bank for International Settlements (BIS), International Monetary Fund (IMF), Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA), and the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS). In 2019, he delivered the Biennial Andrew Crockett Lecture at the BIS to central bank governors and senior policymakers on the regulation of financial institutions in an era of technological and market transformation.

In addition to his academic research, Professor Seru is an active contributor to public policy debates on banking, financial regulation, private credit, and capital markets. His commentary and opinion essays have appeared in leading publications including The Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, The New York Times, and Barron’s.

Professor Seru received a BE in Electronics and Communication and an MBA from the University of Delhi, and a PhD in Finance from the University of Michigan.
